On to Quarterfinals!

Posted: Mon, Nov 1, 2010 11:00 PM

Great execution of the running game and much better defense for the Vikings prevented a repeat of their loss several weeks ago to Waverly-Shell Rock. The 31-7 win Monday night advances the Vikings to the Quarterfinal Round of the 3A State Tournament.

The Vikings jumped off to an early lead after Martin Stalberger returned the opening kick-off 72 yards to the Go Hawks 22 yard line. Although the Vikings couldn’t get into the end zone, Cody Sacquitne chipped in a 20 yard field goal to put the Vikings up 3-0. Gayge Samuelson recovered a fumble on the Go Hawks first possession, but a couple plays later the Vikings fumbled. That fumble was returned for a seeming 65 yard touchdown, but fortunately for the Vikings, it was called back for an illegal block during the return. Waverly, however, advanced the ball all the way down the field, and wound up first and goal from the 1 yard line after a 59 yard pass play.

The goal line stand that followed could arguably have been the biggest series of downs in the game. The Vikings held the Go Hawks on three straight plays, and the Go Hawks missed their attempted field goal with 3 minutes left in the first quarter. Decorah punted on their next possession at the end of the first quarter. A good return to the Viking 38 set up the only Go Hawk score, giving them their only lead of the game, 7-3, early in the second quarter. But the Vikings countered with a 73 yard drive that culminated with an 11 yard touchdown run by Cody Sacquitne. The Go Hawks failed to advance the ball and Decorah had another opportunity to score before the half, but were intercepted at the 15 yard line. Again the Vikings defense shut the Go Hawks down on a three and out before the end of the half, leaving the Vikings up 10-7.

Kyle Kregel set the tone for the Viking defense to begin the third quarter as he intercepted a pass to give the Vikings the ball on their own 44 yard line. Failing to advance, the Vikings punted to the Go Hawk 12 yard line. Waverly then had long drive down the field, but Jacob Humpal intercepted on the Viking 4 yard line. The Vikings offense came back strong with a couple first downs, and then a 58 yard touchdown run by Cody Sacquitne, to give the Vikings a 17-7 lead with one minute left in the quarter.

Waverly managed a short drive to begin the last quarter, but turned the ball over on downs at the Viking 33 yard line. The Vikings chalked up a couple more first downs, and then Cody Sacquitne scored again on a 33 yard run to put the Vikings up 24-7 mid way through the fourth quarter. The Viking defense again stopped the Go Hawks on downs and took possession on the Waverly 37 yard line. Kyle Hove broke free for a 22 yard touchdown run several plays later, to raise the Viking lead to 31-7. Bjorn Gowdy-Jaehnig recovered a fumble on the ensuing kick-off and the Vikings ran out the final minutes on the clock. Cody Sacquitne converted all the extra point attempts for the Vikings.

Decorah is now scheduled to play West Delaware next Monday night in the Quarterfinal Round. West Delaware defeated Clear Lake Monday night 23-16 to advance. Decorah defeated West Delaware in Decorah earlier this year, 31-19. Both teams are now 9-2. The game is set to be played in Decorah based on season records, location of earlier play-off games and season statistics.
