Baby Names from Yesteryear: December 2011

Mad, Bad and Dangerous to know He was the only son of John ‘Mad Jack’ Byron and his second wife, Catherine Gordon. He did have a half-sister, Augusta Maria . from his father’s first marriage to Amelia Osborne. Although George was his first name, he is better known by his title of Lord Byron . His status as one of literature’s most infamous writers has perhaps made his name even the more appealing today. In England and Wales, Byron was at number 466 in 2010, a slight drop from its position at 424 in 2009. In the US, Byron makes a constant appearance in the top 1000, although it has been losing popularity since the 90s. A man as flamboyant and as keen on debauchery ...

Beneteau 58 | Sail Magazine

Beneteau 58 By Peter Nielsen Posted: Aug 10, 2010 Beneteau’s new Sense 50 created such a buzz last year that it was easy to forget that the French boatbuilding giant also launched a new flagship in 2010. There is no echo of the Sense line’s brash, angular styling in the Oceanis 58’s understated lines. The gentle sheer, the low-profile cabintop and the expansive teak-laid deck on the boat we sailed made for a head-turning package. ON DECK Although the 58 is a more conventional boat than the Sense 50, it does not lack for interesting and well-thought-out features. For instance, the mainsheet is fixed atop a molded arch, keeping it well clear of the cockpit and also permitting ...

Fall boat show guide: Prices can’t go down forever

Fall boat show guide: Prices can’t go down forever Posted on 01 September 2009 By Chris Landry Consumers can expect unprecedented deals at this fall’s boat shows, particularly on leftover 2008 and 2009 models, according to manufacturers and dealers. Prices have never been lower, frankly, says Jim Krueger, vice president of operations for Mainship Corp. of Millville, N.J. Dealers are carrying the high financing costs for the boats, so rather than paying the financing company, they’re passing those savings along to the customer. When that inventory is gone, however, the bargains will be, too. Dealers cannot continue to sell boats at these prices and stay in business, says Krueger. ...

Come Sail Away | HILUXURY — Hawaii Luxury Magazine

Come Sail Away The Tide is Rising for Luxury Yachting in Hawai‘i AS ODD AS IT MAY SEEM, Hawai i has never been a beacon for attracting the luxury yachting community. Be it our distance from another significant land mass, or the general laid-back nature of our approach to luxury, it s infrequent that we spot the sleek yachts that grace ports like Monaco or Marina del Rey in Hawaiian waters. Yet a quiet sailing fleet has slid under the radar until now. Chadwick Michael Allenbaugh s Hawaii Yachts, comprised of six Beneteau sail-motor vessels, have stealthily carried diplomats and A-list clientele around the Hawaiian Islands since 2004. Now, they are catapulting in to the limelight, after a ...

Yachting Queensland News 2012 August

SPINNAKER TALES. Thursday, August 30th, 2012 By Ian Grant. High performance Queensland SB20 sailors skipper Glenn Bourke, Rod Jones and Greg Macallansmith reconfirmed their international ranking with a close but impressive class win during the Audi Hamilton Island Race Week in the warm Whitsunday Islands. However it was a tough tactical grind for the Club Marine crew who have won all class regattas including State championships and the 2012 Australian title trophy contested on the tricky River Derwent earlier this year. The talented team presently ranked fourth in the World are working towards matching the tactical skills and boat speed of England’s dual World champion Geoff Carveth when ...

Blue Water Sailing

Blue Water Sailing July 2011 The flagship of the Oceanis fleet offers truly elegant living aboard a boat that will capably circle the planet. Over the years, we have sailed and tested many of the Beneteaus to come to market in North America. And last fall after the Annapolis sailboat show, we had our first opportunity to sail aboard the relatively new Oceanis 58, the flagship of the Beneteau sailing fleet. The boat carries a strong family resemblance to the new Oceanis style—nearly plumb bow, high topsides and very low-slung cabintop with large rectangular windows on both sides. Yet there are a couple of design touches that immediately set the boat apart. The first is the large sugar-scoop ...
