Sea Ray 275

B J Marine has been in Malta for a number of years and is the exclusive local representative for Sea Ray Boats. At the new Office / Showroom in Grand Harbour Marina the International Company have several boats on display both inside and in their private berths at the Marina. The largest boat they have in Malta at present is the Sea Ray 325 with its two MerCruiser 4.3 MPI engines.

The boat is a local demo boat together with a smaller one the company keep on the water so customers can see and appreciate the quality of workmanship, comfort and performance. We made an appointment to visit the boat on a Wednesday afternoon a few weeks ago. On the day there was a fresh breeze and the sea was slightly choppy with waves as high as half a meter.

We met the local Sales Executives at GHM and were shown round the boat before departing. First impression is that the boat is very neat and gives a feeling of solidness as soon as you step on board. It has a wide bathing platform with ladder which retracts inside and out of way when not in use. There is a hatch on the stern with access to shore power cable and other connections to water and power. There is also enough space in this hatch to store either covers or folded down dinghy or outboard which we do not always see on other makes.

The cockpit boasted a wet bar complete with pressurised water sink a cooler and waist container in a neat cabinet to starboard. At port and the back it has comfortable settees for two persons each with additional storage underneath. The control centre has a fully adjusted power assisted steering a all controls are easy to reach and read. Seating is height adjustable and the front folds up to give better visibility preplanning.

We were informed that the whole cockpit can be completely covered for winter months and thus transforms into a living area with windows which can be opened and insect screen protecting the persons inside.

The inside of the boat was just as impressive with a dinette for four on port and a neat kitchenette having hot and cold water system two burner cooker, micro wave oven and fridge. Again storage in this area was plenty. The A/C control panel was close to the kitchenette and the effect was immediate when we switched it on. The private head is spacious and has all the usual requirements including a full sized mirror on the inside of the door and an electric toilet with macerator. The aft cabin had it own storage lockers which light up as soon as you open them up.

We switched the two engines on and were impressed with the smoothness of the 4.3s and the quietness from all points on the boat. Sea Ray does a good job of sound absorption. Access to the engines is from under the cockpit floor, but this lifts up at the touch of a switch, a very impressive operation. On opening it reviled the two engines well spaced and the other electronic and mechanical apparatus all within easy reach for servicing.

In harbour at slow speeds the boat was smooth and the bow showed little lift even in pri planning mode. Out of harbour the sea was rough and white horses covered the wave crests. The boat however showed no fussing and when throttled down it picked up speed and just sailed through the water. We achieved planning a little below 20 mph but when the throttle was pushed to the limits it showed over 40 and the spray was all around us. We were very pleasantly surprised with the lack of banging at such high seas, occasionally however when going through an exceptionally high wave spray was thrown over the wind shield and because we were standing up got our faces full of salt! Even at such a speed in this weather we were able to walk about on deck, the boat was surprisingly stable.

We revved back for the rest of the trip and again were pleasantly surprised at the consumption figures, thanks to the MPI (multi point injection) these engines are extremely powerful on full throttle but very economical around 2200 to 2500 rpm. This was confirmed by the SmartCraft which is a type of computer on board giving all the useful data at the touch of a button.

A truly impressive boat with characteristics found on much larger boats. Ideal for family or group of friends who have a limited time but aspire to further their horizons. This boat can deliver that in style.
