Written by experienced yacht brokers, the PowerBoat Guide is a review of popular powerboat models produced and marketed in the US market since 1970. The book includes over 1,300 best-selling trawlers, express cruisers, motor yachts and sportfishing boats from 26′ to 85′ feet in length. Often referred to as the “Yacht Broker’s Bible,” the PowerBoat Guide has been published annually since 1989.

The Japanese Chin is an ancient Oriental breed that was considered by many to be royalty. They originally lived in the Chinese aristocracy and eventually lived in the Palace Imperial. It is believed that the Chinese so admired these dogs that the Chinese Emperor gave a pair to the Emperor of Japan. In Japan, the Japanese Chin was maintained by the nobles who used as gifts to special people.

In 1853, Commodore Perry visited Japan. While there he gave several Japanese Chin. He gave a pair to Queen Victoria, the daughter of Admiral Perry and the President. This was the introduction of the Japanese Chin to England and North America. The Japanese Chin was known as the Japanese Spaniel until 1977. In 1977, the name of the breed was officially changed to the Japanese Chin.

The Japanese Chin is a toy breed indelicate expression distinctive oriental. I am so amazed how people from East to create these dogs with this type of expression. I think it was a work of art and genius. The chin is a small real dog that exhibits a very proud aristocratic way. He stands about 8 to 11 inches at the shoulder and weighs between 4 and 11 pounds.

Interesting note on the chin Japanese is that it uses its paws to wash his face like a cat.

The Japanese Chin and other Oriental races is a pretty healthy dog with a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years. However, as with all breeds of dogs, large or small, there are few diseases to watch especially the Japanese Chin. They are:

• Heart disease;

• Dyspnea;

• Dislocation of the knee.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is characterized by dilation or enlarged heart chambers and the very small contraction. Symptoms to watch out for this disease in the Japanese Chin are:

• Difficulty breathing;

• Cough

• Exercise intolerance;

• Collapse;

• Sudden onset of pain and paralysis, usually on the hind legs.

The onset of symptoms that should alert the Japanese Chin is in need of emergency medical treatment.

Treatment of DCM is usually drug therapy. Recommended to administer all veterinary medicines. Watch for shortness of breath, increased cough, lethargy or inability Sudden use one or more members. Notification of the respiration rate when your pet is relaxing. Regular veterinary visits to monitor the state are required.

DCM is very common in dogs. The canine disease is acquired in life, but is influenced by genetic factors not yet accounted.

Dyspnea is actually the respiratory distress. It worked, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath. The causes of dyspnea can be any of the following:

• Heart disease or heart failure;

• Lung disease;

• Tumors or cancers of the lung;

• Infections such as pneumonia;

• Trauma;

• Bleeding in the lungs or chest;

• The abnormal accumulation of fluid in or around lungs.

Brachycephalic breeds such as the Japanese Chin (short-faced breeds) are prone to upper respiratory problems.

Symptoms to watch for:

• Weight loss;

• Fatigue.

Treatment of dyspnea depends on the underlying cause. Treatment may include:

• The hospital with the administration oxygen;

• Minimize stress;

• drainage of fluid that collects around the lungs;

• Diuretics;

• Combination drug therapy.

Dyspnea is usually true of an emergency. The first time you notice that your pet have difficulty breathing, please account its overall activity, exercise capacity and interest in family activities. Note the presence of cough or severe fatigue and report these symptoms to your veterinarian for further diagnostic evaluation.

Knee dislocation is a condition in which the patella (knee cap) no longer glides within its natural channel into the femur. Knee dislocations can occur as a result of trauma or develop during the first year of life of an animal. Congenital or developmental knees dislocated are more common. It is more common in small dogs such as poodles, Yorkshire terriers, Maltese and Japanese Chin. Traumatic knee dislocation usually occurs secondary to being hit by a car at any age.

The treatment of low grade cases can be controlled with the limited exercise and NSAIDs anti-inflammatory drug. Severe cases can be addressed surgically.

When selecting your Japanese Chin is prudent to ask the keeper of history of patella problems in the bloodline.
