Princess V72: Style and Sustenance

Friday, March 30th, 2012

We figured we’d like the looks when we announced the launching of the V72. Now that we’ve had the opportunity to see it up close, it s obvious this swooping and curvy express-style performance machine draws its DNA from other forward-thinking designs that flash fashionably across the waters of the Med.

The good looks are obvious, but beneath that silky skin, the Princess V72 has tough-as-nails construction.

But where does that tough disposition come from? The V72 is manufactured in the United Kingdom by a company based in Plymouth, where a seafaring heritage is taken very seriously.

Like other models in the Princess line, this one employs full resin infusion throughout. With a well-consolidated laminate, the amount of resin is reduced for a lighter build that results in swift performance: think 34 to 36 knots with a pair of Caterpillar or MAN diesels. This British builder also knows that a planked teak deck gives sure footing when you’re handling lines on a damp day in an Ipswich marina, so standard equipment on the V72 includes solid teak planks in the cockpit and on the sidedecks. These features, coupled with through-bolted cleats, handrails and lifeline stanchions, accentuate the salty nature of this luxury cruiser.

Substance is a given on the V72, but it doesn’t come without stylish sophistication. Furnishings and finishes in the saloon look sleek, even runway-ready. Forward, the captain mans the helm station from one of two handsome black leather seats. And because cruising is a social sport, Princess puts a circular, raised dinette beside the driver. Here, even the crew can appreciate the visibility from the driving station. Open up the electric sunroof, and everyone can breathe deep of that restorative ocean air.

Although Princess put its engineering know-how into the execution of comfortable outdoor spaces—including a sunpad at the transom and a bench plus chaise at the foredeck—the V72 is also one of those boats that makes a rainy day seem welcome. The full-beam master suite with through-hull windows, lounge, leather desk, and walnut finish on the headboard of the queen-size berth make the prospect of hunkering down downright pleasant. The fit and finish here are excellent, and it’s duplicated in the VIP and guest cabins.

Princess Yachts are distributed in North America by Viking Sport Cruisers of New Gretna, New Jersey, and that relationship offers big benefits for owners stateside. Princess Yachts built for Viking feature many systems sourced from North America. And the company has a location in Florida, so service and maintenance are tenaciously tended to. The yachts also are built to comply with or exceed both USCG and ABYS safety requirements.

In the V72, you have the opportunity to run a well-made yacht that’s at home on either side of the pond.
