Grandma is an old camper from way back, so much so that she would love to just move into a tent for the summer, except that the cookbooks wouldn’t fit, so she was happy to seeEasy Camping Recipes from The Outdoor Princess: 33 Simple Camping Recipes. It is getting to be time to think about getting the gear ready here in Vermont. Grandma must admit, though, that she was downright shocked by the very first recipe — BBQ Shrimp with Dill — which sounds lovely but nothing that Grandma would ever consider as a camp dish. Shrimp spoil much too quickly to run the risk. Later in the book Grandma came across a mention of RV, which of course explains things. Grandma is a tent camper, one of the sort that thinks RV camping is a bit like owning your own motel. (Just kidding. My Dad had an RV for decades.)

Some of the recipes are of the assembled variety that is much of what camp cooking can be about, but others are the real thing. The recipe for Fantastic Fried Bluegill is indeed a great recipe — makes great fried trout and catfish too. Prospector’s Dinner is a dish that every Girl Scout there ever was knows as Hobo Dinner and it is a real goodie, one that has been a camping standby for close to a hundred years.

Grandma did not like the recipe for Navajo Fry Bread, which in this version contains both powdered milk and egg, absolute sacrilege up on the Navajo Reservation where Grandma learned to make Navajo Fry Bread from Navajos, but that argument is for a different day.

Kim has done a decent job with the text layout and has thoughtfully included an interactive Table of Contents, though the interface does need some work and the Table of Contents includes a link to a blank page titled Return to Table of Contents and another called Open Carefully and Enjoy. (You can access is just fine from the TOC button, but the back arrow will take you to a page with a non-working link that says back to the Table of Contents.) Kim might want to take a second look at that and issue an update.

Campers might very well find a new idea or two here. Recommended
