Pershing Hits The Target

THE Pershing 90 megayacht comes with every conceivable extra well, everything except Tina Turner standing on the bow, fishnet stockings near breaking point, screeching Simply the Best at the top of her lungs.

So good is the Italian stallion that Robb Report publications, responsible for a range of international magazines and online portals dedicated to the luxury market, named the Pershing Best of the Best in the 2007 production yacht category.

It’s no fluke because the Pershing 115, the 90’s big sister ship, won the 2005 gong. I’m told that the 90-footer is a restyled version of the original model specifically designed for the American market, and the layout, furniture and fittings are immaculately designed to satisfy all the requirements of this special customer group.

Sadly, I’ll probably have to take a bank executive’s word for it. If you’re interested, though, phone Yachting Unlimited in Sydney on (02) 9566 2628.

Terrific Targa

MEANWHILE, across the pond in Mother England, Fairline Boats is powering ahead with its latest Targa Gran Turismo flagship, the Targa 64, plus its revolutionary IPS model, the Targa 44. They’ll appear in Cannes and at the Southampton Boat Show this month.

The 64-footer builds on the success of the 62 Gran Turismo, boasting a patented retractable roof.

The master stateroom, which occupies the full beam amidships, has an electro-chromatic partition to the ensuite shower room. It changes the glass from opaque to transparent at the flick of a switch, allowing light to flood through the feature windows into the cabin.

In addition, there’s a forward stateroom and unique twin side-by-side port cabin, both with ensuite access.

A highlight is the wide atrium-style access to the lower kitchen area, which features a continental galley and seating.

Al-fresco entertaining is a specialty in the spacious cockpit, with its bar and extensive dining area.

The deck saloon and helm are also bathed in sunlight from the large windows and full-width sliding roof.

Speeds of 35 knots are expected from the twin Caterpillar C18 1015hp diesels.

The first 64 will arrive here in March ahead of the Sanctuary Cove and Sydney boat shows. Price will be around $3.4 million.

The Targa 44 gets a brand-spanking Bernard Olesinski hull to accommodate Volvo Penta’s IPS propulsions system and is also the smallest Fairline to feature the Gran Turismo retractable roof.

The IPS system apparently offers 15 per cent faster acceleration and 30 per cent better fuel economy, while the joystick control takes all the hassle out of berthing.

The base-model IPS500 370hp diesels give a 33-knot top speed and the optional IPS600, producing 435hp, will run to an impressive 35 knots.

Conventional shaft-drive cruisers of this length often need more than 1000hp just to achieve 30 knots.

Down below, there’s a master cabin and an aft cabin with twin berths that slide together to form a king-sized bed.

The aft ensuite has day access from the saloon, a unique feature for a boat of this size.

The Targa 44 is available with a range of optional gelcoat colours, including the striking new Sand effect.

It’s yours from a cool $1.2 million, though such is demand we won’t see one until late ’08.

An extra cabin

STILL a bit rich for your blood? Closer to home, Mustang Marine has announced a three-cabin version of its IPS-powered M43 Sports Flybridge.

Because the motors and drive units are located under the cockpit floor, the space beneath the saloon floor is freed up for a third cabin and extra storage.

The master stateroom in the vee has a queen-sized island berth, there’s a starboard guest cabin with double bunks, and the new port-side guest cabin which features a double berth. The layout also has separate head and shower compartments.

The first three-cabin version is nearing completion and pre-orders have been placed. More information from dealer Harbour City Mustang on 9819 7730.
