The boat that was voted

“European Powerboat

of the Year” comes to U.S.

When French manufacturer Jeanneau unveiled its New Concept 11 model at the Dusseldorf, Germany, boat show in January, the plan was to sell it primarily in Northern Europe. Then, two things happened: The NC 11 won “2011 European Powerboat of the Year” at the show, and Joel Lipton of United Yacht Sales in Stuart, Florida, fell in love with the boat. Today, United Yacht Sales, which is also a Prestige Yachts dealer, represents the NC 11 model in the North American market.

“For the money, this boat is an incredible value,” said Joel at the recent Palm Beach International Boat Show, where the NC 11 was on display alongside the newest Prestige motor yacht offerings.

Designed by Jeanneau in collaboration with Italian firm Garroni Design and French studio JF de Premorel Concept, the NC 11 has a fresh, contemporary look. Although its bridge deck is fully enclosed, extra-large windows and rear sliding doors provide 360-degree views and lots of light. There’s a glass pilothouse door that opens to the side deck, and the Webasto sunroof also brings in the sunshine and breeze.

The cockpit is spacious for a 36-foot boat, and you can slide the aft seat back on tracks onto the swim platform to open up even more room for entertaining at the dock—a neat trick. Walkaround side decks make it easy to get to the bow; the port one, which the pilothouse door opens onto, is slightly larger than the starboard side-deck.

Inside the deckhouse, driving, dining and entertaining are all on one convenient level. There’s a compact galley aft, opposite a very versatile dinette. It serves as a dining area and makes up into a double berth. In addition, the rear seat flips over so guests can face the cockpit, and the forward seat flips the other way, allowing passengers to watch the waters ahead while the boat is underway. The port-side helm seat is raised for a great vantage point as well.

Below are surprisingly roomy, private staterooms with good headroom. The master, forward, has a queen berth and hanging locker. Instead of the typical open mid-berth area, there is a twin cabin to starboard; the berths can be converted into a double bed. The two cabins share a head that has a separate shower.

The wealth of room the designers found for lower-deck accommodations is partially due to the compact Volvo power package: twin Volvo D3 diesel stern drives. If you like the feel of Volvo’s joystick control, it’s an option on this boat, allowing you to move the out drives with fingertip accuracy while maneuvering into a slip.

“We think that most customers will want the joystick,” Joel said.

The Volvos are also efficient. According to performance figures provided by Jeanneau, the NC 11 consumes 15.14 gallons per hour of diesel at 3,200 rpm, which translates to just over 12 knots, and 24.45 gallons per hour at 4,090 rpm (wide-open throttle), in the 30-knot range.

Sporty but accommodating, quick and efficient, this Northern European boat may well secure another niche in the Southern U.S.
