Hemmings Find of the Day 1966 Buick Skylark Gran Sport convertible

Early Buick Skylark Gran Sport models possess a rare blend of attitude and refinement, giving them the ability to blend in at drag strips and country clubs alike. For fair-weather enjoyment, it s hard to beat drop-top models, and this 1966 Buick Skylark Gran Sport convertible for sale on Hemmings.com seems to check all the right boxes. Fully restored in 2004, it wears a tasteful shade of dark blue (though we re not sure that s the original color) and sports a 401-cu.in. V-8 that was rebuilt in 2010. The current owner has only put 200 miles on the car since the engine was gone through, meaning we d want to add a few more break-in miles before verifying that output was indeed the factory-specified 325 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque. From the seller s description:

This is a fully restored original, original 401 Nailhead 325 HP, original automatic transmission, original factory air, which is very rare for a convertible, original AM-FM radio, original steering wheel, bucket seats, console, posi traction, power top. The car was fully frame up restored in 2004 and has been driven very little since, Looks runs great. The engine was fully rebuilt in 2010 including main bearings, stainless valves, timing chain, crank, heater core, steering gear box. Car has been driven about 200 miles since rebuild.

Danny Plotkin says:

I m a fan of these tie and jacket muscle cars, an excellent alternative to the ubiquitous GTO, Chevelle, and dare I say it, the 442.

Using the same A body platform as its aforementioned cousins, the Buick GS has, as the Wizard said to the tin man one thing the other s haven t got a heart .

The 401 Buick nail-head in the A body is about as spot on a powertrain combination as there ever was, turning the workaday Skylark into a cruise missile without the badges, stripes or noise upon which its relatives relied.

The Super Turbine 2-speed (which by the way was not at all a Powerglide) was more than up to the task of putting 445 pounds of twist to the asphalt and this car could destroy 3 sets of tires in one afternoon so long as the cops didn t intervene. Even with two cogs, they were sufficiently spaced to make use of the nail heads unique torque curve aided by a solenoid operated variable pitch stator.

I have always considered the Skylark GS under appreciated. I suspect one day soon they will command the respect they deserve. Any kid whose dad had one of these, was a kid who had a lot of fun and knew where to buy used tires.
