LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. — It will be a weekend of fishing on Lake of the Ozarks, for adults and kids alike.

The Lake West Chamber of Commerce Missouri Buddy Bass State Championship is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 20 and Sunday, Oct. 21 on the Lake of the Ozarks. In addition, the first Lake West Chamber of Commerce Highway 5 Kids Fishing Derby will also take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20.

The tournament and derby are brought by the chamber and hosted by Captain Ron’s Bar and Grill on Lake Road 5-50, at the 34.5 mile marker on the Osage Arm of the Lake of the Ozarks.

The cost for the tournament is $125 per team. There is an 80 percent payout; the amount of the payout depends on the number of entries. There were 50 anglers registered as of Monday, Oct. 15 and Lake West Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mike Kenagy said he expects another 20 or more late entries.

Take-off is at 7 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 with the check-ins and live well checks beginning at 6 a.m. All boats must be checked back in by the time of the weigh-ins, which are at 4 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. A tournament awards ceremony will follow the weigh-in on Sunday afternoon. Drawings will be held for prizes: among them, the opportunity to be the first boat on the water in the 2013 tournament, and more.

The 2011 Missouri Buddy Bass State Championship first place winners were Brian Maloney and John Shumway, weighing in at 29.93 pounds. They won $1,677.50. Second place went to Dennis Pace and Tom Kleine at 29.47 pounds, winning $1,067.50. The 2011 third place went to Brett Govreau and Jason Schumer at 29.17 pounds, winning $762.50. Dalton Wesley won the Big Bass prize with a 5.07 pound bass that earned him $500.

The Highway 5 Kids Fishing Derby is free to children ages 12 and under. The chamber hopes to promote a love of fishing and other outdoor Lake of the Ozarks activities in children with the derby.

Derby registration begins at 10 a.m. at Captain Ron’s and will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a boy and a girl category. All participants will receive a certificate of participation. The chamber will also recognize the boy and girl who catch the biggest fish and the ones who catch most fish. If a child catches a fish that might qualify for the biggest fish, parents should bring the fish to the tournament table to be weighed. The awards presentations and prize drawings will begin at 2 p.m. All participating children will receive some sort of prize.

“The weather looks like it’s going to be beautiful, in the mid 60’s and sunny,” Kenagy said.

For more information about the tournament call the chamber at 573 374-5500.
