Chris-Craft Launch 25 Captain’s Report

Chris-Craft’s Launch 25 Restores the Image of the Affluent Boating Lifestyle

Climbing on board is one of the first design features you smile about. You can board from the stern swim platform or from either side on built in step down platforms built into the side cabinetry. Stepping into the boat from the side is the most natural and probably easiest with the tumblehome aft design wrap-around at the stern. The stern has an integrated swim platform.

The engine is in the rear now, rather than amidships in the ’39. You can order your Launch with Mercury, Volvo or Yanmar engine packages. The engine hatch is large and has a very comfortable sun cushion cover. The hatch rises on dual electric rams, and there’s plenty of space to work around the engine.

Chris-Craft offers several upgrade packages with very nice options. I really thought the Heritage I package my test boat had was impressive with its teak inserts. The helm and companion bucket style seats were extra comfortable and adjusted forward/back and swiveled. Perforated custom stainless steel dash and glove box covers along with the custom Chris-Craft gauges added to the historic look. The aircraft styling in the gauges was a neat retro look that took a little adjusting to before becoming comfortable with them.

Testing was in two steps due to the lightening storms. I will test a boat in the rain, but I won’t play human lightning rod to write the story. In one to two foot chop, the 25 Open Launch ran very well. She was a little noisy through the hull, but this one did not have the extensive foaming they are putting on the boats built after her. The Corsair 25 did have the extra foaming and it showed in the quieter ride. I did get some spray, but I believe it was more due to the rough conditions associated with the storms rather than any real deficiency in hull design.

My test boat had the extra optional teak, adding weight to a total of 5,500 lbs, but she still danced up on plane in only about 5.6 seconds. She cruised best at 29 mph turning 3000 rpm. At this speed she will burn about 9.1 gallons per hour and take you 254 miles on a full tank.
