— As a newbie to this forum (and to boating for that matter) I’d like to relate a story about how the Passagemaker Forum and one of its members helped me and my wife make a big decision about purchasing a boat in general, and, specifically, about using a buyer’s broker. I had been reading everything I could get my hands on for several years, attending boat shows, considering new vs. used etc. I ran across this Forum about 9 months ago and found it to be very helpful on a wide range of topics. We originally were considering a traditional trawler style yacht, but after considering the 2-3 knot current in the Mississippi River where we planned to do most of our boating, we decided that one important feature was a boat that could cruise at 15 – 18 kts.

Reading through this Forum, I kept seeing the name of “yachtbrokerguy” pop up with good advice in many areas, and decided to give him a call to see if he would represent us as a buyer’s broker in our search. Tucker Fallon greatly exceeded our expectations in this regard. We made a pilgrimage to his office in Ft. Lauderdale to look at as many used boats we could see in 3 days. Tucker arranged to see over 20 boats in that period, personally driving us to each one, pointing out the good and not-so-good points of all we saw. By the end of that time, we had a great idea of what we liked and didn’t like about the various makes and models we boarded. We eventually focused on a 2000 Carver 530 Voyager that seemed to have most of our requirements met.

Several weeks after returning from Florida, we ran across freshwater 53’ Carver in TN that was priced right and in a good location for us to get it back to the St. Louis area where we planned to keep it. Tucker handled the negotiations with the seller’s broker, attended the sea trial (at his expense) and gave us very good advice during the entire buying process. When we first engaged Tucker he told us that part of his broker service was a couple of days of free “boat handling lessons” on our new boat. Once again, exceeding our expectations, Tucker offered to accompany us from Pickwick Lake on the northern edge of the Tombigbee all the way to St. Louis. on our new purchase. The trip covered 540 miles, 3 river systems and 8 locks in 6 days. He kept us on schedule, out of trouble and ran an excellent “school of the boat” for the entire 6 day trip. By the way, the Voyager performed flawlessly and we’re very pleased with our purchase.

Thanks to the Passagemaker Forum for answering many questions during this “adventure” and specifically to Tucker Fallon for making the whole purchasing process fun and exciting. I wholeheartedly recommend the buyer’s broker approach.
