I have re powered 6 or more 25 boats this summer. I think when it comes to this size boat and diesel re power. the only way to go is the new Volvo D4. The engine is a four cylinder with counter weights to balance the engine. they have common rail fuel injection ,electronic controls. completely redesigned DPH out drives capable of handling 450 HP each. I have seen these engines now for four years and have very little problems with them. The out drives are virtually bullet-proof. The props are monstrous and hold the boat in the water like no other being duo-props and made from a very sturdy nibral material. They come with a two year warranty and cost about 28,000 complete package each. The packages include the helm station. controls. engine. transom shield. drive and the props are 1900 per pair. The average time to replace each engine package is about twenty hours and may also take a few hours to prep or repair the transom to accommodate the Volvo shield.

That is a very interesting situation. I know that the older Volvo diesels were running hs style transmissions. The bolt pattern on the new volvo s are the same as the old ones but I don t know what you are running.

As far as the marine diesels I have seen including Yanmar and Mercruiser. there is not another engine that outperforms the D4. The boats I m running them in are heavy. 8000 lbs neighborhood and they run quiet. no smoke. tons of torque and are bug free! reports are in the 3 to 5 mpg range as well! I think they top out at 11 gph at wot and burn less than half that at cruising speed.

I would have to do some research to see if it s possible to connect a new D4 to an older transmission. I guess it s personal preference but I find that reliability on 100 mile trips out to sea outweigh any brand loyalty I used to have. They just don t breakdown much.

Volvo also make a new twin drive IPS system that is out of this world but I understand the desire to stick with your boats original configuration. I know that Yanmar and Mercruiser have had a lot of joint ventures in the past. Yanmar has even graduated to the common rail fuel injection and computer controls. They just aren t something I deal with anymore.

At any rate. between price. reliability. customer service and maintainability. Volvo has been a winner at our shop. Research your options and see if you can t test drive some units that are similiar to what you might want to put in your vessel. Check forums and you can always go right to the source such as Yanmar etc, They all have contact info and are a wealth of information. I wish you luck in whatever you decide!
