Sea Turtle Is Quickest Boat In Slow Race To Key West

January 15, 2006 | By Steve Waters Staff Writer

After a record-breaking race last year, the 47 sailboats that competed in the 31st Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race endured slower conditions, but Sea Turtle rose to the occasion.

Sea Turtle, which also won the PHRF E Class, finished at 4:23:40 p.m. Thursday — the race started at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday off Port Everglades — for a corrected time of 15 hours, 56 minutes, 40 seconds.

Stand Aside, owned by Bill Bollin of Sylvania, Ohio, won PHRF B Class and was second overall in the PHRF fleet at 16:27:28. E-Ticket, a Beneteau 38 owned by Dan Myers of Boca Raton, was third overall at 16:27:43 and second in the PHRF E Class.

Sjambok, a TransPac 52 owned by Michael Brennan of Annapolis, Md. was first to finish, in an elapsed time of 18:45:54, arriving at 7:50:54 a.m. Thursday. It finished third in the PHRF A Class but was the top boat in the scoring for the IRC Class, with a corrected time of 25:04:12.

Sea Turtle was second in IRC at 25:45:36.

Condor, a Corsair 31 skippered by Todd Hudgins of Jensen Beach, was the first multihull to finish, arriving at 8:20:16 a.m. Thursday, and was the top boat in the 11-boat multihull fleet with a corrected time of 19:00:16.

It was a fun race, said Miller, a member of Melbourne Yacht Club and Eau Gallie Yacht Club, whose boat topped the PHRF fleet in the 2004 race.

Winds during the 160-mile race conducted by Lauderdale Yacht Club and the Storm Trysail Club were light to moderate and shifty.

Last year the wind blew hard at the start and got stronger. Carrera, an 81-foot Reichel/Pugh skippered by two-time Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Ken Read, set a monohull race record with an elapsed time of 10 hours, 24 minutes and 2 seconds. Zephyr set a multihull record of 10:11.

This was quite different, Miller said. This was very docile when it comes to wind and wave conditions for a Key West Race.

Miller credited an experienced crew for the good performance and said having a good navigator who can keep the boat on a course close to the reef in the Keys without getting too close is essential.

It doesn’t take a hotshot boat to win. We just sail it well, Miller said. I’ve got a navigator that I’ve sailed with for 25 years, and we communicate well. I’ve had the same crew for the past five years. They all own and race their own boats. It’s sometimes challenging when you have eight captains on the boat, but we work pretty well together.

One of the things I principally do on the boat is keep everyone involved for 24 hours. A lot of boats drop the spinnaker at night and take it easy. We sail hard all night and we sail along the reef, in 10-15 feet of water. Most people don’t want to do that, but you have to do that to win the race.
