I would be pretty concerned about wet wood in the transom. A few weeks of storage in a warm shed is not going to dry out the transom core and may even speed up whatever wood rot may have already started. Please plan on having the boat surveyed before you buy it!

Aside from transom problems listed below are a few other reports sent to us by owners. Again Merc Bravo III corrosion is a problem.

o 1998 Bayliner 2858 Command Bridge (BABA17EC1798):

09/24/98 Owner was motoring home as he approached dock he attempted to shift into reverse but found that it would not engage engine wouldn’t even come out of fwd. His boat plowed into neighbor’s boat caused $400 damage. He also found out that dealer was aware of this before he purchased this boat.

o 1997 Bayliner Ciera 2858 Command Bridge; MerCruiser 7.4L (s/n 0K013809) w/Bravo II outdrive (purchased new leftover ’99):

11/21/01 Owner noticed leak from manifolds midseason in 2000. Owner tried several times to stop leak by replacing gaskets (OEM parts) but these did not work. Owner also tried after-market gaskets but they did not work. He did some investigation on his own spoke to his local dealer who advised owner to filed down manifolds at gasket mating surfaces because they may have been warped. While doing this owner discovered cracks in manifold. They were located between pipe plugs at top of manifold gasket. Owner went back to dealer and technician told him that there were a lot of problems w/ big block manifolds leaking even new out of the box. Owner spoke with mechanic at marina who agreed with tech. Merc won’t honor his request to have a rep come out and look at engine. Merc says they won’t help because owner did all repairs himself. He has 25+ yrs experience as a mechanic.

o 1998 Bayliner 2858EC (BL2A54ECK798); Mercruiser 7.4L MPI (s/n OLO28440) w/Bravo III outdrives (s/n OL168736):

11/29/01 Fall 1999 owner had boat pulled out of water his mechanic called Merc to say that there was corrosion on lower unit of outdrive. Merc said they were unaware of these problems that they could do nothing about it. Now owner’s corrosion is so bad that oil is leaking out of lower unit. Dealer said 3-yr corrosion warranty is up. Owner has also had quality control problems w/boat. Owner’s mechanic called to confirm damage. Said when he was at Merc dealer meeting a few weeks ago Merc confirmed they’re having problem w/ bearing carrier of different metal. Mechanic said all other Bravo IIIs at the marina have corrosion damage but no other makees of engines do.

o 1998 Bayliner 2858 (USDA7ECC898); MerCruiser Bravo III I/O:

12/05/01 Owner says outdrive is severely corroded trim cylinders are too. Owner replaced cylinders repainted outdrive says zincs for saltwater last only 3-4 mos. Owner also reports complete wear of the aluminum coupler splines. Merc acknowledged that the splines are now made of stainless steel but they deny this indicates a previous design defect.
