Bayliner 180 OB (2010-) Captain’s Report

When it’s time for a less complicated pace, you can’t beat the Bayliner 180 OB.

Simple Layout

The Bayliner 180 OB layout offers no surprises. It’s truly a “what-you-see-is-what-you-get” boat. Forward are three small storage compartments. The bow has room for an anchor and rode, while the two compartments under the seats to either side of the bow could house the required safety equipment.

The walkthrough windshield is connected by a pair of C-shaped channels that are interlocked to provide the swing capability. I found this assembly tended to rattle a bit, where a piano hinge would not, but some rubber pieces strategically placed would alleviate this. Keep in mind that this is a price-point boat and little tradeoffs like this are manageable.

In the cockpit, the helm gets a bucket seat that slides and swivels, and I liked the triangular mechanism, under the front of the seat, that you activate in order to move in both directions. Lift one side of the triangle and you swivel, lift up on the other and you slide. Simple and effective.

Seating for eight is straightforward in an uncluttered layout.

The port side seat is a back to back, and lays flat to convert to a lounger. In front, at the dash is the stereo, which is Sirius-ready but lacking the requisite MP3 jack that today’s boaters require. A self-draining cooler with plastic lid lies flush with the dash. This lid is hinged and when closed created yet another rattle, but a trip to the hardware store to get a couple of tiny rubber feet will solve that problem. (I simply closed a thin lanyard from my GPS into the lid and it also solved the problem.)

Aft is a bench seat that holds three persons and storage is underneath, albeit not enclosed. Loose items will slide out so a plastic bin with a cover would work well here, as well as a bungee or a net. There is deck storage for skis, and the hatch is trimmed in aluminum that fits snugly into the carpeted deck.

Simple Hull Design

Below the waterline, there are 3 lifting strakes and a hard chine. There is a step built into the chine to force air under the hull and increase speed. It’s not a full beam step, but it’s there nonetheless. Without doing a side by side comparison, I can’t say if it’s effective, but I can say it is not detrimental to the turning performance. The boat turns just fine.

As simple and uncluttered as it gets: four rocker switches, two gauges, and circuit breakers in between. Embedded in the port side tach are fuel and volt gauges.

Simple Handling

I found the handling to be very gentle and forgiving. Hard turns were not allowed — that is to say, if you tried to turn hard, the 180 OB would simply bleed off so much speed that the turn would deteriorate into a docile reversal of direction. There would also be ventilation of the propeller and the engine would start to over rev, which means that not only is the boat going to keep you out of trouble, the engine will also have a thing or two to say about slowing you down as well.

What you won’t get from the turns is a skipping across the water that I’ve seen in some other stepped hull boats. She holds her ground nicely, which adds to her slowing down in a hard turn.

There’s some pounding in chop, but that is to be expected. This is a protected water boat so don’t expect offshore performance in her 17-degree deadrise hull.

Simple Performance

The Bayliner 180 OB is so gentle and forgiving that one forgets that boating is a skill. Her performance with the standard 90-hp OptiMax is neither too shabby nor great… I’d more aptly describe it as “easy.” Her top speed was just shy of 41 mph, and best cruise was found to be at 3500 rpms and 21.8 miles an hour. Just a couple of shots of up trim will move the spray from the helm area to aft of center and you can feel the added acceleration that accompanies the bow lifting clear of the water.

Now at that best cruise speed, the 180 OB was burning only 3.1 gph which gives her a range of 146 miles. These are not bad numbers. That translates into nearly 7.5 hours of running on a 23 gallon (87 L) tank of gas. If you figure $3 bucks a gallon then $69 will have you going for a very long day, or multiple short days. That’s a return on your investment that anyone would be proud of.

With her 1,852 lb (840.1 kg) loaded weight, the 180 OB can be trailered by just about any reasonable vehicle with a tow hitch.

Simple Systems

The Bayliner 180 OB has such simple systems that maintenance is a non-issue. As long as you keep her clean, she will be good to you. Her electrical system is very basic, with the battery running a bilge pump, nav and anchor lights, horn, radio and ignition. If any of these things quit, clean off the connecting wire and I’ll bet it will start working again.

The fuel system is even easier — a tank and a line running to the engine. As long as you keep the gauge off the “E” side of the scale, you’ll be fine.

Simple Reality

If you’re looking to keep your boating life in a calm and peaceful realm, you couldn’t go wrong with the 180 OB. She’s not only forgiving, but she also seems to compensate for a heavy hand or aggressive technique. This makes for a boat that is ideal as a starter boat, and one that can get the family involved in the show, rather than delegate them to sitting in the sidelines as nothing more than passengers.

After all, it’s not called “pleasure boating” for nothing!

Top speed for the Bayliner 180 OB (2010-) is 40.8 mph (65.7 kph), burning 8.1 gallons per hour (gph) or 30.66 liters per hour (lph).

Best cruise for the Bayliner 180 OB (2010-) is 21.8 mph (35.1 kph), and the boat gets 7.03 miles per gallon (mpg) or 2.99 kilometers per liter (kpl), giving the boat a cruising range of 146 miles (234.96 kilometers).
