Bayliner 3258 2nd Engine ruined(?)

This is my first post as I usually find whatever I’m looking for by searching past questions. But I’d like some advice. I apologize for the length…

Last September, my starboard Engine (5.7L V8 Mercruiser) lost oil pressure and sprayed oil out the engine fill cap and throughout my bilge. There was strong metal to metal contact when the engine was turned over.

The conclusion from the mechanic (Harbor Marine) was that water got in the engine cylinder(s) and blew the engine. They thought that the water could have been the result of the engine having been improperly timed (and running backwards).

I paid them to replace the engine with a Jasper engine. In addition, the manifolds and risers from both engines were deteriorating, so I had them both replaced. I also had them check the timing on the port engine in case there was a similar issue.

Since then, we’ve taken several trips (December, New Years, a trip in March, Opening day in May, June and a week in the San Juan islands in July). In between the winter trips, the boat was stored on the “hard” and I winterized after each trip.

On the last leg of our last trip, I noticed a “tick, tick, tick” sound as I started the engine. I checked the oil (fine) and thought the noise could be a valve lifter. The boat ran well (didn’t miss or stutter and I had plenty of power).

We are/were planning another 10 day trip (next Friday) to Canada, so I called the shop who installed my engine to have them check the noise out. They couldn’t find the issue in the valve’s and informed me that the problem was “deeper”. The put in a warranty claim with Jasper and recommended pulling and replacing the engine. I was concerned about the timing, but they agreed they could have it done before my next trip.

Tonight, they informed me that they pulled the engine and found water in 7 of the 8 cylinders. They said that Jasper would not cover the work because there was signs of water in the cylinders. When I asked what caused the water to be in the cylinders, they told me they didn’t know, but brought up the issue with an engine running backwards at times.

In my opinion, either the engine was defective or the installation was done incorrectly and the repair should be covered by Jasper or them. When I told them this, they told me that they are very competent and couldn’t have done anything wrong.

They said that maybe there is an inherent design issue with the boat since this is the second engine that has a problem. (Note: the port Engine is also a Jasper engine – when I bought the boat, the owner told me the original mercruiser engine was defective that they had to have it replaced.)

I’m open to advice/suggestions – I’m probably going to get the boat back and get a second opinion from another shop…. Frustrated as it looks like this is going to be a ton of hassle and no August vacation for me…
