Baja 292 Islander

Baja’s 292 Islander puts the thrill in family boating

The Baja 292 Islander runs like a performance boat but offers the versatility of a large runabout.

Think a bowrider is the ultimate concession to the kind of humdrum practicality that comes with middle age? Think again, and then go take a look at the 292 Islander from Baja Marine.

Sure enough, the 29 4 -long, 8 10 -wide model is a bowrider. But that is where any similarity between the 292 Islander and its open-bow brethren ends. First, the 29-footer is among the largest production-built bowriders on the market. Second, thanks to sweeping lines, a deep interior and a double-wide bolster at the helm, it s more like a sportboat than a runabout. Reinforcing the speedboat aesthetics is a bold W.A.V.(Water Adventure Vehicle) graphics package.

True to its offshore roots, the 5,500-pound 292 Islander rides on a 24-degree deep-V hull. With a base 310-horsepower MerCruiser 7.4L MPI engine under the power-raised hatch, the boat should deliver plenty of punch. For those who crave more power, more potent engine packages are offered. Drivers should appreciate the boat s power steering as well as its backlit Faria instrumentation.

Performance-minded drivers will appreciate the bowrider s easy-to-read gauges and race-style steering wheel, throttle and shifter.

All that should please the performance crowd. Naturally, Baja didn t forget the social set. For entertaining, there s a console with a wet bar in the boat s cockpit. The entertainment center can be outfitted with a refrigerator and a butane stove. A portable head comes standard. Under each bench is a deep stowage area for gear. Larger items can be stashed in the aft in-sole locker, which has a hinged and gas-shock-assisted lid.

The most impressive party features, however, of the 292 Islander are the removable speakers for the Clarion Performance stereo system. Beach the boat, pull the speakers and set them on the transom for a wide open, if a little sandy, dance floor.

Lamination materials for the 292 Islander include vinylester resin and various layers of mat and woven fiberglass. End-grain balsa is used as the base for the boat s fully encapsulated interlocking grid stringer system.

The 292 Islander also looks to be a worthy choice for the watersports crowd. The previously noted in-sole locker is large enough for water skis and wakeboards, and a stainless-steel ski tow is mounted on the transom. The boat s integrated swim platform has its own stowage locker, as well as a retractable boarding ladder. For sun worshippers, the U-shaped lounge forward of the sun pad transforms into a tanning bed with an optional filler cushion.

According to Baja literature, the 292 Islander was designed with input from 500 consumers. That seems likely given all the manufacturer built into the boat. It looks to be a real crowd-pleaser.
